Larder Beetle In Bedroom
Commonly known as the skin or hide beetles.
Larder beetle in bedroom. Being a household bug it is an extensive pest whose name comes from its presence in parched cured meats that are stored at room temperature before freezing. The larder beetles come from the family of dermestid beetles. When larder beetles gather in hundreds or thousands damage can become significant. Larder beetles enter homes through open doors or cracks in walls during the late summer and fall to escape cold weather.
Like the adult larder beetle s stomach larder larvae have short yellowish hairs on their bodies. They re pretty big like 6 8mm long. Sticky traps are also a great way to detect larder beetles place these traps near furniture sinks and near rugs. Interspersed with black dots this light yellow band is a prominent feature that sets the beetle apart from others in the same category.
I keep the cat food in my bedroom as the dogs will end up eatting the cat food. Their name comes from the practice of ages past where before refrigeration households had larders to store cured meats cheeses and the like along with other pantry staples. If the infestation appears to be in more than one space then lay several traps throughout the house. Laying larder beetle traps around the area of infestation will ward off the adult beetles.
I have recently seen a couple larder beetles in my bedroom i know they are attracted to dark places wood and dry pet food. Larder beetle larvae are about long and do not have the characteristic beetle shape yet and looks more like a sow bug except that the bands on its body are striped brown and black. They overwinter near food sources particularly in kitchen pantries. A larder beetle is really small so it does not take much of an opening for them to find their way into a bag.
Since animal feeds are so concentrated you could be making a very significant contribution to the larder beetle population growth. I have killed 2 today and i am sure they have laid larva somewhere near my base boards. Larder beetles really common in homes especially during the colder months since they search out warmer living arrangements like most bugs when the deep freeze of nature rolls around. Larder beetles are found worldwide and considered as household insects.
Larder beetles have a yellow band running across their front pair of legs these beetles are hard to miss. Not really itchy at least for me. A well built trash can with a lid is useful for storing animal feeds. The larder beetle is not an uncommon pest.
Due to their habitat being not specific to certain sensitivities the larder beetle population thrives and infests anywhere it finds a sustainable food source. Their larvae hairs and so forth will cause welts that look vaguely like insect bites.
